Volunteer Expectations

Volunteer with Our Team

Volunteers are an essential part of CHiP’s mission. By giving their time, compassion, and skills, volunteers help us support individuals and families experiencing crisis, homelessness, reentry, and life transitions. To ensure a safe, respectful, and effective environment for everyone, CHiP asks all volunteers to follow the expectations outlined below.


⭐ 1. Commitment to Respect & Dignity

Volunteers must treat every client, staff member, and fellow volunteer with kindness, dignity, and respect.
This includes:

  • Using encouraging and compassionate communication
  • Being patient and nonjudgmental
  • Respecting cultural, personal, and religious differences
     

⭐ 2. Maintain Confidentiality

Volunteers must keep all personal or sensitive information shared by clients strictly confidential.
This includes:

  • Personal stories
  • Housing status
  • Contact information
  • Any details learned during support interactions
     

Volunteers must follow CHiP’s full Confidentiality Policy at all times.


⭐ 3. Follow Instructions & Procedures

Volunteers agree to:

  • Follow all CHiP safety rules and staff instructions
  • Ask questions if unsure how to perform a task
  • Report concerns or unsafe situations to staff immediately
  • Use CHiP supplies and donations responsibly and only as intended
     

⭐ 4. Professional Boundaries

To protect both clients and volunteers, CHiP requires volunteers to maintain professional boundaries, including:

  • Not giving out personal phone numbers or home addresses
  • Not transporting clients unless assigned or approved
  • Not giving money or gifts to clients
  • Avoiding romantic, financial, or personal relationships with clients
  • Keeping conversations appropriate and respectful
     

⭐ 5. Attendance & Reliability

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Arrive on time
  • Notify staff if running late
  • Cmmunicate if unable to attend a scheduled shift
  • Commit to the tasks assigned during their shift. 

Reliability helps CHiP operate smoothly and support clients effectively.


⭐ 6. Safety First

Volunteers must help maintain a safe environment by:

  • Following staff instructions
  • Using good judgment
  • Avoiding unsafe situations
  • Reporting any concerns immediately
  • Not engaging in physical intervention (unless trained and directed)
  • Wearing appropriate clothing for assigned tasks 

Volunteers must not report for duty under the influence of drugs or alcohol.


⭐ 7. Positive Representation of CHiP

Volunteers represent CHiP in the community.
We ask volunteers to:

  • Speak respectfully about CHiP
  • Maintain professionalism on and off-site
  • Avoid posting identifiable client information on social media
  • Seek permission before sharing photos of events or activities
     

⭐ 8. No Harassment or Discrimination

CHiP has zero tolerance for:

  • Harassment
  • Bullying
  • Discrimination
  • Threats
  • Abusive language
  • Any behavior that makes others feel unsafe

Such behavior may result in immediate removal from volunteer roles.


⭐ 9. Growth & Communication

CHiP encourages volunteers to:

  • Ask questions
  • Request additional training
  • Share ideas
  • Communicate challenges openly
  • Support fellow volunteers

We believe in continuous improvement and teamwork.


⭐ 10. Consequences for Violations

If a volunteer violates CHiP policies or behaves in a way that compromises safety, dignity, or professionalism, CHiP may:

  • Issue a verbal warning 
  • Reassign tasks
  • Suspend volunteer service
  • Terminate volunteer involvement
  • Notify authorities when safety is at risk

All actions are taken with fairness and respect.
